John Hughes was singularly responsible for a lot of mirth and merriment in my life, and his work takes pride of place in my movie collection.

If you’re a fan or not, have a John Hughes evening and bask in the genius.

My John Hughes Top 5

1. The Breakfast Club

What’s not to love? Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and of the greatest teen movies ever made. And Simple Minds on the soundtrack to boot.

2. Pretty in Pink

Cinderella with some attitude, Molly Ringwalk strikes again.

3. Sixteen Candles

The ’80s empress strikes back, the centre of a furore around her sixteenth birthday, watch out for a young John Cusack.

4. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

You can’t have not seen this. And if you haven’t, I suggest you rectify this immediately.

5. Uncle Buck

John Candy. Makes me laugh like a muthafwucka.
